One printed book per family combined with the items noted on the supply list provides a rich study of modern America.
Conveniently included in the book are picture study art, poetry, links to hymns, copywork, and more. The lessons are simple and clearly laid out in a weekly plan.
The content in each subject area is coordinated around modern America, creating a rich, immersive study and a harmony of lessons. Without Doors: Modern America includes history lessons from the Civil War through September 11, 2001. The living history spine is engaging for families as they navigate through modern American history together.
The original “American History Timeline Song” will reinforce the timeline of the United States.
Older students also add suggested dates to their Book of Centuries.
Middle grade students will have a weekly citizenship lesson from The Young Citizen’s Reader.
Without Doors: Modern America highlights the geography of the national parks. Students will also study an atlas and answer state map questions. Students will create watercolor maps of seven different states.
There is a short weekly lesson highlighting basic geography concepts for elementary students.
Students will read six living books that coordinate with the study of modern America.
Without Doors: Modern America includes one modern American poet study per term.
Copywork selections coordinate with weekly lessons, building a strong foundation in spelling and grammar.
Older students will add passages to their Commonplace Book.
Poet Study includes Emily Dickinson and Robert Frost.
Without Doors: Modern America includes rotating enrichment activities including: Composer Study, Artist Study, Hymn Study, and Handicrafts. The two composers, four artists, four hymns, and four handicrafts are all carefully chosen to coordinate with the study of modern America.
Composer Study includes Duke Ellington and Aaron Copland.
Artist Study includes Winslow Homer, Henry Ossawa Tanner, Grant Wood, and Norman Rockwell.
The nature lore readings delight families while grounding students in scientific knowledge of tide pools and farms. Out-of-door nature walks and nature journaling prompts inspire an interest in God’s beautiful creation. Students will also look closely at how farm life is important in modern America.
